Ryan was ready to drop by the time they closed up that night. Between the previous night’s adrenaline hangover coupled with lack of sleep from the lumpy couch, he felt like one of the walking dead. At least tonight he’d be staying someplace relatively safe and warm—although with Mike nearby, whether he’d get any actual rest was still up in the air.
Mike’s apartment was a below-street-level studio a few blocks down from the bar. Ryan wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but he was knocked for a loop when the door swung open on a living room straight out of a sixties sitcom. Cream-colored carpet that looked freshly shampooed. A long gray sofa and matching recliner. A sunburst clock hung on the far wall, ticking loudly in the silence, with a couple of framed sketches hanging on either side. There was a small TV with a built-in DVD player on a rolling stand parked in the corner, right next to another little table that held a sewing machine. Shelves lined the walls, crammed full of paperbacks and DVDs. Ryan couldn’t read the titles from where he stood, but he’d bet a few of the movies featured Rita Hayworth or Marilyn Monroe. A tiny kitchen stood off to the left-hand side of the room, just a stove, a sink, a fridge and a table. Reminded him of his parents’ old apartment in Passaic.
“It’s not much, but I call it Shangri-La,” Mike said, sweeping inside with a flourish. “C’mon in and make yourself at home.”
Easier said than done. The place was so nice and clean, it made Ryan all the more aware he still smelled like burnt firewood. He pulled his arms in so he wouldn’t touch anything, holding his duffle bag well above the carpet. “I should’ve done my laundry first.”
“Oh, don’t worry about it, sugar. After you have a shower, I’ll put all your clothes in the tub to pre-soak. Otherwise we’ll never get the smell out.” Mike’s eyebrow arched. “You do want a shower, right?”
Ryan’s knees nearly buckled at the mere mention of it. “Yes, please.”
The small bathroom was a study in pale blue, the towels, rugs and shower curtain matching perfectly. The white linoleum floor shone so bright, it stung his eyes to look at it. Every surface was not only spotless, it practically glowed.
“Jesus,” Ryan breathed. “I could eat out of your sink.”
Mike laughed. “You can try, but I wouldn’t recommend it. There’s a robe hanging here on the back of the door you can put on. Leave what you’re wearing in here, and I’ll throw it in the tub with everything else.”
“Okay. Thanks, Mike. I really do appreciate this.”
Mike patted him on the shoulder. “No problem, sugar.”
Ryan couldn’t remember the last time a shower felt this good. He stood under the hot spray until his skin tingled, then grabbed a bottle of baby shampoo from the shower caddy and lathered up. Reluctantly, he rinsed off and climbed out, feeling as fresh as it was possible to feel at midnight after a long day’s work.
